Vasily Vasilevich Konovalenko was born on July 5, 1929, the fifth child and only son of a Russian mother and a Ukrainian father living in Petrovka, a small town in east-central Ukraine. While he was a toddler the family moved to Donetsk (then known as Stalino), a much larger and more cosmopolitan city in eastern Ukraine, to better their lives and opportunities. GOLDEN, Colo., Sept. 11, 2012 – “Gold Prospectors,” a rare gemstone carving from the artist Vasily Konovalenko, is on display at the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum for the next year. The piece is on loan from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which has the only publicly displayed collection of Konovalenko’s work outside of Moscow.

After visiting numerous institutions and homes in Russia and Europe, they published Stories in Stone: The Enchanted Gem Carvings of Vasily Konovalenko (University Press of Colorado) in 2016. Also that year, the Museum loaned three sculptures to the Moscow Kremlin Museum for the first comprehensive exhibition on the artist and his work in Russia in nearly 50 years.

Gem Sculptures by Vasily Konovalenko Over the span of about four decades, the late Russian artist Vasily Konovalenko (1929–1989) produced more than 70 wonderful gem-carving sculptures that depict themes and scenes of Russian folk life.

After earning a degree in art and architecture, he became a stage designer for the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. He worked on productions of Swan Lake, Through decades of Soviet upheaval and Cold War tension, Vasily Konovalenko (1929-1989) revived and refashioned Russia's gem sculpting tradition, creating sculptures that reveal his enduring inner freedom.
